So the Cannon T3 is going to be on sale for black friday with an extra lens. It is 12mp. Is this good enough for nice coral shots once I get a nice macro lens or should I hold out for the Cannon T2i or T3i?

How much is it going to sell for?
It is my understanding that the quality of the sensor and lense is much more important than megapixels. More than one photographer I questioned (I work for a newspaper) before I bought my 16 megapixel Nikon D5100 recomended it over the newer 24 MP D3200 because of the price and some features the 5100 had that the 3200 didn't.

Megapixels aren't nearly as important as other features. I can't remember (because I haven't camera shopped in years) what all I looked for when I got my camera. A good lens on any body will make a big difference. If you are having to choose between a camera with two stock lenses and a camera body only for the same price with more features I would suggest the body only. While the stock lenses are okay I rarely use them. I have a Nikon D90 that I got without a lens to make the body cheaper and I bought the lens afterward. I think I ended up paying less in the long run and having better quality stuff.

I know that I'll need to save up for a nice macro lens but at least I would have a decent camera. Here are the deals I found.

All of the photos in these threads were taken with a Canon EOS Rebel T3 (12 MP camera). It is possible to get great shots with the camera if you know what you are doing. The lens is a Tamron 60mm f/2.0 macro. The chip is as good a more expensive canon models, but the body is not as solid (lots of plastic). I keep it in a hard case and treat it nicely - it should last a long time.

In my experience, the lens is far more important than the body. If you get into the hobby, you'll go through more bodies than lenses - electronics change often, but the lenses last a very long time and rarely change. Thus, they also don't depreciate like electronics. So invest in the glass, go cheap on the electronics and don't worry about megapixels.

Once you're above about 8mp, ignore the higher mp numbers. Unless you're blowing up your photos, to poster size, anything about 5mp is useless.
