What dilution is everyone using when they dip corals in melafix? Should I just follow the directions on the bottle? I usually use diluted lugols but know that can be a little harsher on coral tissue so I was going to give it a try........

You talking about Melafix Marine correct? If so here is what I did.....

I dipped a Torch that had BJD in a half gallon of tank water and 4 cap fulls of Melafix marine which is close to the directions. I kinda wanted it stronger since BJD is a quick killer for LPS. Multiple dips in consecutive days killed it off and saved the rest of the torch.....If it's not Melafix Marine I don't think corals should be dipped in the regular stuff that is for fish disease. I dipped for only 5 min as described on the bottle......

It is pretty strong stuff and will smell up a room.....Not a bad smell though.

What are you dipping and what for? Precaution?

Yes marine melafix, I have a trach that I am pretty sure has been getting picked at by my African flameback,I haven't actually seen him pick at it & it doesn't bother any of my other brains or my scoly or anything else in my tank for that matter but I am 99% sure it's been picking at this particular trach...so I have been doing a lugols dip every 3rd day & for the time being I have covered my trach with the botton of a 1 liter soda bottle(with holes punched in it for flow) to eliminate amy harrassment & was thinking of trying melafix every other dip or so because again from what I've read most seem to think it is easier on coral tissue that lugols....

Pretty sure that smell is the tea tree oil......

If you notice no signs of disease do not dip it anymore. It will only further stress the coral by moving it around so frequently and exposing to any type of dip.

Like I said I'm pretty sure disease is not an issue....it wouldn't be beneficial to continue dipping to expedite the healing process? I can definately see where your coming from though.........

Never knew you could use Melafix to dip corals.

I always used iodine to help them heal.
I'll have to experiment with some frags!

I don't think it's going to speed up the healing process by stressing the coral out. I would let her be ;)

I'm taking your advice, it already looks better & it's only been covered for going on 4 days.....I knew I was taking a chance with that african flameback, I'm hoping that once the trach is healed & I uncover it the angel will leave it alone......it's so weird how they will just nibble on 1 particular coral in a tank full of 'em.........

I agree. If there is no sign of any new damage, then leave it be. If the coral is otherwise healthy it should heal on its own.

Good luck.

It's definately looking better, keeping my fingers crossed, it's an awesome piece........
