Melafix

Melafix is a tonic made of teak tree oil and barely works in freshwater what says saltwater
Best is Maracyn, not Maracyn oxy or Maracyn 2
Maracyn is ethromyacin and treat for 5 days

The bottle states fresh or salt water
Like many manufacturers, false claims
It again does not do a thing- the ingredients is a giveaway. It’s a waste of money

I have an anthias with popeye. I read this melafix may cure this?
Problem I realize is it's and antibacterial. Will it kill my denitration bacteria. Have I destroyed my biofilter?

Popeye in fish have a couple of different causes. Is just one eye involved?
If one eye is affected, the fish is still eating, and you cannot see air bubbles in the eye, it may heal on its own (but will take up to a month). If you get signs of infection: redness, worsening of symptoms, then Erythromycin, Maracyn 1 would be indicated. This sometimes impacts your beneficial bacteria, so you need to monitor the ammonia after dosing.

As said, Melafix is an herbal tonic. It has been shown to reduce parasite loads in experiments, but the dose was different and "reduce" is not the same as "cure". Melafix is "patented", but the patent is for the emulsifying technique used, not the medicinal properties.

I do not use it myself and it is not part of my formulary. There are too many cases where it didn't do anything. The simple fact that it won't hurt beneficial bacteria will indicate that it also won't hurt pathogenic bacteria either.

Agreed - I have used it both in fresh and saltwater years ago - it never seemed to help

So I can say it’s a phenomenal coral dip. Easy on coral and it definitely kills bugs. I use it. I don’t use it for disease, but I wouldn’t say it’s useless.

It could have happened when I was try
Ing to catch another fish. It's still eating like normal. Looks otherwise healthy. I think I can see a gas bubble under the eye?

Thanks Jay
