I currently have a mimic Tang and melanarus wrasse in at. A few days ago I lost a Gramma I had with them that seemed fine. Now the wrasse is laying on the bottom if I tap the glass he will get up and swim but then lay back down. I just finished copper treatment about 4 days ago did a water change and dosed prazipro. I did another water change today to get some new water to him. Any ideas what is going on ?

Unfortunately, that is just a general symptom of an ill fish, nothing specific to a particular disease. Can you get a respiration count on it while it is laying there? Just count the number of gill beats in 15 seconds and multiply by four.

If I read that correctly, you lost the gramma after concluding the copper treatment. Can you outline the treatment? Product used, how long, why you were dosing it?

Yes I did lose the Gramma. I had them in 2.00 ppm copper for 3 weeks while dosing metroplex. Then I did my first round of prazi 5 days ago. The resp count is 64 per minute.

The respiration rate is actually slow/normal, so that was a blind alley. Your treatment seems fine....sorry, I’m stumped.

Hard to figure out I think he is stressed sometimes when the lights go out fish fight each other I have had it happen many times in my early years the gramma might have been the first victim. How long have the fish been in the tank?, How long has the tank been running?, What did the gramma do before he died?, I think the gramma was getting picked on and the medication just ended it could be the same for the wrasse.

(I do prazipro for only 24 hrs with added bubbler for oxygen depletion. Then big water change and carbon to remove prazipro.)
Also, very important is a small sand box. Your wrasse needs the sand box to reduce stress. Just 2-3” in a container just big enough for the fish to bury itself.
