Melanurus Wrasse dying

Yes. I had ordered it just after my last post. Should be here tomorrow. Hopefully the little guy can hang on.

Just got home from work. He's still hanging in there. Doesn't seem better but doesn't seem worse. Just hang on til the medicine gets here tomorrow little guy!

Good luck! I hope he hangs in there for you

Well it's 10:30 here and time for bed. The wrasse is still kicking. He's actually a little more active than he was earlier. I haven't been able to get him to eat so that's a worry. The medicine arrives tomorrow so hopefully that will help. All he wants to do now is lay on the bottom of the tank then move around a bit after an hour or so and then lay down again.

Not Meredith but depending on severity I know my buddy let his eels sit for a few days. I know some only do for 30 mins.

I read on the bottle where you can treat the entire QT tank - is that what you mean by "sit for a few days"? Will that affect the Coral Beauty and Pajama Cardinalfish in the QT with him? It also says if I do that I need to remove the carbon AND it will kill all bacteria in the tank - so have to deal with ammonia increases.

Correct, that would affect anything else. Can you use a separate container for this guy only? Sounds like you need to do more than the 30 minute bath.

Will it hurt the other 2 fish to get dosed?

I have another tank that's a QT Tank. (I misspoke earlier - the fish are in the Hospital Tank). But I have two corals in the QT Tank for 12 days still - so I can't move him there and treat him. And I don't think putting him in a bowl is really good. What about daily 30 minute baths? Any downside to that?

Those 1 of the more experienced will need 2 answer for you, as I'm clueless. Id really hate to point you in a bad direction with the wrong info.

I understand. The bottle says it "can be used as a preventative measure, especially with newly hatched fry". That makes is sound like it won't hurt an already healthy fish. Main concern is what is better for him - repeated baths or treating entire Hospital Tank.

@melypr1985 - Should the Methelyne Blue bath be repeated?

Watch him and see how he does after the bath. If he's improved then there's no need to do another bath. If he seems to still be suffering then you can do another in a day or so.

Well, he's still alive. In the Meth Blue bath today he was scooting around like crazy - haven't seen him move so much in days. But in the tank he stays at the bottom. He looks like he's trying to swim up but can't. He will swim 4-6 inches or so just off the bottom of the tank and then stop again. A few times he'll swim and point his nose straight up, hold it there for 5 seconds or so, then drift back horizontal. He hasn't eaten in 3 days now. After the bath today while he was still somewhat "active" I reached in with a dropper and put a little brine shrimp (his favorite) right in front of his mouth. Didn't touch it. I'm wondering if something happened with his inner floatation / navigation system (a biologist I am not) via the ammonia spike. And I'm wondering how long he can last without eating. He may survive the ammonia spike just to succumb to malnutrition. :(

I just watched him again. He reared up nose pointing straight up and looked like he was trying to swim up. He bounced a few times and then floated back down. Almost like he has no buoyancy. Or maybe not enough strength. Wish I could fix it for him. :(

What you are describing sounds like a spinal injury. It may have occurred if he tried to jump and hit a glass top, or got startled and accidentally dashed into the glass sides of the tank. There isn't much that can be done, sometimes they recover, sometimes they don't.

Well, I was out of town since last Thursday. Hated to go with a sick fish - but it was a family vacation planned long ago. I paid my niece (just graduated HS) to come over once a day and feed the fish, test levels, and medicate the wrasse, etc. She came over for 2 hours the day before we left so I could go over things with her. She had no background in this. When I left, the wrasse would just lay at the bottom of the tank and hardly move. Here's a video I just took of him as we just got home. My niece did an incredible job!
