I have a pair of lumen max elites in se. They send out a huge amount of light. Much more than the the de they replaced. The fixture allows a glass shield. How much par does this shield hamper? I am looking to lower the par at sand bed, but still keep my sps at higher in tank happy. My old de (same watt) allowed me to keep lps and sand bed happier with less light. This system is much brighter.

Acclimate your corals to the new light over a couple weeks. Why do you want to limit the light?

I only want to cut down the amount of light on sand bed. Which is about 30" below fixture. I do not have a par reader but the amount this fixture sends out is far greater than the more narrow de units. My old unit i was able to keep acans and chalices on sand bed. Granted not directly under but toward edges on tank. These fixtures magnify the light. Even areas i was able to place plate corals with old units, now i can not. The de units all had glass protectors the se it is optional. If it puts the par by enough at 30" it may help.

The glass shields on the DE HQI fistures are UV shields. If you put glass on the SE fixtures make sure they are heat resistant tempered glass. I've seen regular glass shatter because of the heat. Just a little water splash on hot glass = disaster.

Thanks that would be tragic. These fixtures have swing locks for an optional glass. I would use the glass that is sold for this unit. I have found several sellers that still have the glass for the mogul fixtures. I know the glass does cut the par i just don't know if it would make that much of a difference.

I Have these same fixtures.. I also have a 30" deep tank.. I'm having issues w/ TOO MUCH LIGHT (even for SPS).. I have the glass covers though I doubt they remove much PAR... I think best bet if your setup can do it, is to take some window screening and maybe put two pieces of window screening together and then lay on top of the "anti-jump" screen on your tank.. this should filter some of the light... IF YOU PUT THE GLASS into your fixtures, be sure to do the following 2 steps: 1) be sure to slide the glass in, but leave about 1/4" space for air exchange.... 2) drill some holes in top of fixture to create a convection flow of air from bottom thru top.. if you dont, it will get very hot inside your fixture and your lamp life/spectrum could suffer
