Metal plumbing

Every piece of plumbing after the RO/DI should be plastic. Anything else and your asking for troubles.

Thanks for your response...

Why is that? Is RODI water that chemically active that it corrodes metals such as brass? There is plenty enough metal plumbing upstream of the RODI equipment.

Interesting question, what are your initial thoughts on application?

In theory as long as it's only freshwater it should be fine. As long as the metal doesn't come in contact with saltwater, but if this is under a stand I'd be worried about salt creep and evaporation corroding/rusting the metal and it contaminating the system that way.

In other words I'm sure it could be done but why take the chance.

I wouldn't use metal on the fresh side. You still have oxidation occurring, albeit at a slower rate. Stick with plastic and save a few bucks.

RO/DI is extremely corrosive since it has been stripped of all its ions and is trying actively to get back to its natural "dirty" state. It will pull the copper out of brass alloys in a heartbeat.

Application is ATO. My impression has always been exactly what @AZDesertRat has just said but I had no audit trail on that impression.

I remember having been told once not to drink RODI. Aside from not necessarily tasting like good ole freshwater, aka sweetwater, it is so chemically active it would eat the fillings right out of your teeth.

its not just RODI - its all water that will pick up bits of the metal or oxidized medal or ions of the metal.

Take the Flint crisis as an example. The lead wasn't actually in the source water of detroit or from the river they started pulling from. The source of lead was the pipes that fed the water to the homes. It was the same lead pipe when they were using Detroit water versus river water. The difference in lead occurred when Flint stopped using the anti-corrosive chemicals that they used to get from Detroit that prevented the lead in the pipes from leaching into the water.

Plenty of metal upstream from the RODI: yes - but that's what an RODI does. it removes the metals and salts leaving behind just plain water.

Great point!
From our viewpoint as aquarists, our RODI systems act as something of a reset on all the upstream contamination issues, sort of a reprieve for prior sins. So don't let any plumbing downstream of our RODI processing give up that gain.
