I'm assuming a user error, but I did try twice. At the beginning of the week my MG was at 1280, now it's at 1380. What could cause an MG spike?

Changes to the tank in this week include adding two clown fish, and a coral frag. Calcium went from 405 to 390, Alkalinity went from 11.3 to 11, and PH went from 7.8 to 8.12

New tank, it is fully cycled after a month.

Thank you!

I believe alk/calcium/magnesium are somewhat related. One can go up and lower the other

What test kit? And have you done a water change between testing?

Red sea test kit. I had not done a water change. I just did one today about 10% and will retake the parameters tomorrow.

More then likely a test error. Make sure to throughly clean the vial with vinegar, wipe out with a q-tip and rinse out well with ro/di. I've notice with testing in a vial I thought was clean still had a faint bit of residue in it.

That test has a reputation for people having a difficult time with it.
I recommend making sure your vial clean and dry, and using a tuberculin syringe to draw up your sample.
I don't feel a 10ml syringe is all that accurate when getting a 2ml sample.
A difference of 0.1 mL is a 5% change in your test volume and can make a difference.
Also, are you mixing the sample after each drop of the first reagent?
