+1 on the ballast. Sorry bro. Good luck with it though, you can try the bulb but if it is relatively new, keep it. IMO it is the ballast so save time and some money(by not replacing both if not needed) and replace the ballast. IMO

It could be the bulb also... First thing I would do is try a different bulb and see what happens...
Secondly I would try putting a fan blowing on the ballast sometimes they over heat and shut off... If you try both of those and it don't cure your problem it's most likely the ballast you could try changing the starter first it's the grey cap inside the box it would most likely be the culprit.... Let us know if any of those help...

thanks to everyone, but yea i tried switching over to my brother's bulb. its still doing the same thing and then i tried placing a fan on it because i thought it could be over heating and shutting off, but no luck im just being stubburn... lol does anyone know where i can get a new ballast for a HQI 28g nano-cube for a decent price?

so i bought a new electronic ballast (170$) and now i know its not the ballast...
double end light bulb...
so now ive tried to get a new ballast, replace the bulb, any more ideas? i mean its obviously the light fixture in the hood just dont know what is causing it exactly, doesnt appear to be anything wrong with it? no rust or salt build up around where the bulb connects..

How olds your hood? You might try taking it back to the store where you bought it and explain whats wrong and what you've done to try and fix it and see if they will give you a new hood to try. I had a problem with one of JBJ's CF hoods and the store where I bought it just gave me a new one and then had JBJ replace the bad one for them.

because i just got this tank about 6 months ago im not sure if my dad purchased it from a store or sombody off craigslist.. so id rather not have to pay for a whole new hood, cuz i called jbj about the ballast and they only have a year warrenty on their ballasts and it was from 2009 so that screwed me (and they couldnt even give me any ideas what was wrong with THEIR products SMH)..
today i purchased the ballast and the guy at the store told my dad to splice the wires from the original ballast with the new one because plugs didnt match up (dumb idea) now i know its not the ballast lol so we messed them both up for 170$ and a void of the warrenty... =]

Could be a break in the wires but doubtful I would try a new socket now you have eliminated everything else.... Splicing the wires is fine but make sure to use wire nuts or something similar and put the connection inside a metal junction box etc.... Or plastic for that matter just don't leave it exposed where a wirenut could fall off and zap ya!!!

on these hqi 150w MH 28g nano cubes, jbj puts a safety heat sensor right above the MH in the hood of the tank.. its been getting too hot causeing the light to shut off and back on after it cools down. ordered some new hood fans and circuit board should be good to go.
