All the shield is just a piece of tempered glass. De bulbs lack to ability to absorb the uv like the se bulbs do, which is why it is recommended to have it. Its not just for your corals but also your fish. And don't forget you will probably be messing around in the tank at some point with the light on. Do you really want to mess with uv that close to your skin and body? I know I wouldnt.

I'll be going to the glass shop tomorrow I was just so confused on what type of glass to use

I was thinking tempered glass at 3/16 does that sound ok?

So I went with tempered glass
I asked the person who was helping if it had some uv protection and she said no which surprised me because envy thing I read states that all tempered glass has some sort of uv protection

She said they would have to search for it because they never order any sort of special uv protection that is what made me just go with the regular tempered glass

LOL. All glass and even most transparent plastics have UV reduction properties. The tempering gives the glass a little more toughness but does nothing for UV attenuation.

Yes all glass has some sort of uv protection whether we know it of not

Yes when she said it doesn't I was like umm yeah I don't think I need some special uv glass that she said she would have to dig deep and search for it because it's something they don't often sell

UV typically ranges from 100-400nm, so you can see from the optical transmission spectrum below that fused silica glass does not transmit well in these wavelengths:
