Michael's Reefer 170

This weekend, you and I can both pour a little whiskey on the ground for Neptune and GHL ;)

EDIT: or maybe sacrifice a goat

I'm waiting till next weekend to fool with mine.

(lol)
Neptune Systems sent me a 6 hour process to try  to get my brand new Apex box back up ;Wacky

At least it's plug switches are stuck in the "On" mode for the cal-reactor and it's pumps.

:)

Well I expect that from apex Freddie there more worried about getting your hard earned cash and then after that don’t call them as they frown on anything except a email then in the email they tell u to do all this stuff like we are idiots and then finally say ok send it in on your dime. While ur sol for a controller but for half the price of a controller they will send u a new brain

I hate apex’s way of fixing problems

I’m intrigued on what’s the matter with ur doseing head Michael

I have a lil box of all the tools I need to clean my pumps and such it is a pain in the butt but once it’s done I never have to buy another tool again

All products have problems, I've just run into so many GHL software bugs that my patience is tested to deal with this. Maybe next weekend

Happy belated thanksgiving

Did u get it fixed?

Happy belated Thanksgiving to you. I had a great holiday, hope you enjoyed yours.

No. For all the love GHL reliability gets, both their iPhone and Android app are sitting on average 2/5 rating with the majority at 1 basically saying doesn't work. Neither updated in 2.5+ years. I need to bump dose up and the app is so broken, it just ticks me off. PC software random disconnects. I work in software, specifically with SW that controls hardware, so I'm probably less accepting than most.

At the moment, I'm leaning buying a Pacific Sun Doser after the holidays or after tax return and throwing this one in the trash. The current one works if I run it in high speed (less accurate, but close enough). Maybe I'll mail it to ya, you can combine with the Neptune and have 6 heads!

I have a WiFi coral box doser so u don’t have to buy anything

I was just going to dose acropower and peroxide with it
Justin,
Did you buy another DOS during Black Friday?

Freddie

Micheal,
I was just about to buy the Kore 5th until Apex released the DOS and I already had an Apex controller.
Are you still looking at the Pac Sun?

Freddie

The Kore is the backup plan.

Right now the tank is doing great and i'm partially horrified by how much I spent this year. I'll only buy anything new if my hand is forced :)

If I had to do it over again, I wouldn't buy any GHL products due to their software. However I've already got more than $2k invested and you live with the decisions you make (and regret).

So happy to hear your Calc Reactor is working out. It's a beautiful thing when a plan comes together

I'm starting to hand dose daily (Alk/Ca), and I'm thinking of getting a dosing pump soon. I really should've gotten it during Black Friday, but I already bought so many other "essentials" that I couldn't justify a doser. The GHL 2.1 seem to be great for a lot of people, but then terrible for a select few. I haven't found any doser that's been great for everyone yet. It sounds like you would choose a Pacific Sun Kore over the GHL if you had to do it all over again?

I'm also considering a Kamoer X4. The only problem people had with that one was the terrible setup instructions, but also not that many people have them so the sample size is pretty small.

Like you said, it's not a straight forward call. You also don't need to tinker with it, so if it initially works, you're probably good to go.

GHL has a PC app, two iOS apps, Android app, cloud app. The PC app cannot stay connected to my doser, all the other are buggy. I find it unacceptable to sell a $450 doser with 2.5 year old mobile apps with majority of 1 star reviews. It's under the category of "you have one job".

I'm too exasperated to deal with any more GHL problems, I could write pages of bug-reports. If you get a bad one + have patience, I'm confident you can get it all sorted. Most likely, you won't get a bad one. I'm just out of patience.

When I look at their software bugs, I think they either don't care or aren't very good at SW. If you come to the later conclusion, then you just want to walk away from the platform. Reefer525XL had a similar experience where he sold his GHL and moved back to Neptune and was much happier.

GHL are working on things, so maybe in a year things will be better. There are some interesting parallels with the AP700, it took Kessil years to get the software right. Except with GHL, the doser has been out for years already

Thanks for that Michael! I totally agree on the software part. It's such an integral part of the entire product, it shows a lack of quality when the software is bad. I too know how that all is (I run a tech company and developed plenty of complex software on iOS etc.).

Michael I have one u can have as someone has some new tiles

Just let me know

I had a similar issue with my GHL 2.1. In addition, I had ridiculous noise levels even when it was dosing. My thread also contains direct responses from Matthias Gross re my issues. https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/squeaky-ghl-doser-2-1.304255/page-3#post-4124464

In the end, I switched to a TUNZE calcium reactor and haven't looked back.

Just stopping by and posting, so I get updates on the R2R... dash board :)

What people will do for likes these days :)

The tank is healthy, no coral losses, growth much slower than expected.

I lost a clown fish due to jumping, which sucks. I'll purchase the Red Sea lid when that's available at BRS.

I can't increase the lighting because the Mitras is running at max temperature. I may lower it an inch or two in the near future. Only getting ~65% of max power before hitting max internal temp :( I wish it had better/strong fans (fans at 100%)

I shutdown the macro algae reactor. I didn't like that it difficult to view the amount of algae and I was going thru cycles where it started to die off, partly because I didn't clean it enough. I have an extra AI Prime light, and may build a little eggcrate section in the sump for chaeto. My phosphates are solid, but NO3 is high, so I've started NoPox. To my surprise, no cyano. We'll see what happens to NO3. The only filtration is the NYOS + Filter Socks (I change 2-3x weekly).

I miss having a cool fish (jealous of all the life in @GoVols & @SPR1968 tank). Tempted to get a small ( <1.25inch) anthias when one pops up on Diver's Den. I know they need a big tank, but a cool wrasse would wipe out my great pod population and a dwarf angel is risky.

I haven't fixed the doser, just got GHL burnout. But @GoVols kept nudging me, so some torx wrenches arrived to take it apart this weekend.

My remaining clown has decided to host the MP10, which is just bizarre. I'd love to get him something (duncan?) so he appears more normal :)

If your waiting for the Red Sea netting canopies:
I talked to Kevin Davies last week and the first batch just hit the US last week. They go to the brick and mortar shops first.
Kevin said many more already on the way and they should be available online in a short matter of time.

Looks like Red Sea has developed a winner with those screen tops and they are fully aware about it.

Must admit that @SPR1968 's Red Sea screen top is a very nice add on :)
