I went to the Lansing Swap and the prices were mostly equal to prices online, some slightly lower, but since you’re not paying for shipping they are cheaper I suppose. I was hoping for better deals. Besides the prices it was an incredible sight to see! And I enjoyed every minute. However I wouldn’t drive 5 hours for it. Not worth it to me. Don’t you have any closer to you?

I'd be up for some small frags for sure - I'm in Kentwood [Grand Rapids] and have a 13.5 gallon nano, so no big pieces =)

Let me know when you have some small pieces to get rid of, i'd be happy to take them and grow them out!

Most of the swaps are fun to shop at, Ive been to most all of them around the state (Lansing, Ann Arbor, Detroit, GR, etc). Prices are generally cheap for common things, but can be as expensive for "big ticket" items as shopping online. You can probably find things cheaper locally - but you'll likely have to wait until someone near you has it. It comes down to a convenience factor, usually. The bigger swaps tend to have more variety, but its usually the same core group of vendors. If you havent gone, its worth going at least once, but unless you have a big wad of cash to blow, its likely not worth a five hour drive.

Nothing specific, just looking to fill in some of my bare/empty rock with some frags to grow out. I did drive out to the swap in Brownstown [wife and I also used the trip to go to IKEA]. Got about 8 small frags and an awesome clam from Cherry Corals. Prices weren't posted for most of the tanks, so I skimmed over most of them as I wasn't looking for anything 'named' or too exciting.

Todd and Brett have some pretty stellar stuff - I highly recommend making a visit to their facility in Livonia if you get the opportunity. I've been eyeballing their ORA Squamis for the better part of a month now, but I opted for more sticks instead :)
 
Everyone who posted here, mostly are from West MI and im surprised that the MI site is pretty much dead. What can be done to revive the local chapter?

The Grand Rapids swap (West Michigan Coral Swap) is on Sunday May 6th from 12:30-4pm at 2327 Walker Ave SW Walker MI 49534

They dont have a vendor list posted yet, but they had 20 or so tables last year with some locals and some vendors as well, so I would assume it will be about the same this year. Details should be coming out in the next week or so about who will be there.

GRMAS (Grand Rapids Marine Aquarium Society) disbanded in April of 2017 due to lack of interest. They had been basically a core group of about 4-5 people that were either slowly leaving the hobby, or too busy to actually continue to run the club. I attended a few meetings back in 2016, but they are about 45 minutes from me, and my work schedule didnt allow much involvement. Most of the club people worked with the Mid Michigan club to host the Lansing swap in February, but that was about it. Now anything thats run on the west side is mainly done by individuals within the community. GRMAS was given permission by the old board to restart and allow the club to continue to operate, but I havent recieved any new communications since February. I do have contact information though, if anyone is interested.

I live in Farmington and yeah its 2 hrs of drive to get to Grand Rapids. I know the scene here is MIReefers classified on FB. But its also good to meet. When you do get info, please send a shout out. Im sure something can be done....

The Mid Michigan club is pretty active still, from what I understand, and thats a bit closer (I think Jim is in Ann Arbor or close thereby), but they had their own forum (www.captivereefs.com) thats no longer a site. Not sure if they went to facebook or not. I think the people putting together the Brownstown swap were attempting to get something together as well, at least there was a lot of chatter on FB about it at one point (Michigan Reefers Classified) and there are lots of people on the East side that are active there. Might be worth a look.

Personally, Ive meet a lot of great people on the west side, and met up with many more at the various swaps throughout the years. Thats always a pretty convenient way of getting together.
 
Sometimes I [slightly] am tempted to get back on to facebook, haven't been on it in about 4 years! Time flies

Yeah. I went to one swap and did buy some corals, met some ppl via classified on FB. But when you have a forum and keep updating build threads, see the tanks, know the folks, it’s more of an interaction and conversation. Just a thought!!

I'm not entirely sure why things died down in terms of a SE Michigan club. I think the fw people (cichlids) still have some sort of regular meet ups around here, but ultimately it comes down to having enough people who have the time and want to make it happen. We have the Marine Breeders Initiative Workshop every summer in Bloomfield Hills which is one of the best events in the country, but a lot of people aren't interested in breeding fish and inverts.

Tickets go on sale next week I believe. I go every year... its really great even if you arent actively breeding fish :)
