Just added a 2.5" Midas Blenny to my 30L tank the other day and he was rather reserved at first, really holding down a specific piece of rock-work (which has persisted) and not swimming in the water column much.

A few days in and he's gotten pretty comfortable leaving the rock to swim around and I've noticed a few instances where he "gets into it" with the other fish in my tank who occupy the swimming space he likes, namely my 2 true percula clowns.

His hangout rock is next to the frogspawn they host, but he also gets pretty ambitious during feeding time to the point where I've now noticed both of my clowns (and 1" leopard wrasse) have minor rips on their back fins.

Any thoughts on how big or little of an issue fin-nipping is, how to reduce said aggression, if this is common for Midas bennies (or if I got a rogue one) would be much appreciated....

More than likely the clown are the aggressors, midas blennies tend to be fairly chill....
Fish can be fish though, aggressive fish are hard if not impossible to tame.

Thanks for the insight - to clarify, i'm not wondering "who" the aggressor was....it was the Midas. I'm wondering how big of an issue it really is, and if theres anything that I can to reduce it

Aggression usually subsides once the pecking order is established. However, some fish will stay aggressive their entire life.

My Midas blenny is the Devil. She gets into it with and beats down my Male lyretail anthia... which I was told could never happen...lol she bites me any chance she gets. Even makes a game of it...I feel she knows I am afraid of her. She initially went after all the fish, now her and the lyretail just go at it once in awhile. On a happy note, all the fins grow back. ;)

OMG my midas Blenny is a nightmare, its more aggressive then both of my tangs put together, constantly nipping my wrasse and anthias, also my dottyback. Doesnt touch the tangs or clownfish though.

It was also one of the last fish to be added.

Midas blennies are frequent fin nippers to open water swimmers.

IME it wont go away, but it shouldn't get too bad either.

I’ve had many Midas Blenny in my days. My personal fav... I have definately have had a couple pretty aggressive ones. They like to show dominance if they’re able. Very likely he will become more chill. They r awesome fish. I prefer the African Midas, they in my opinion are a must have in a Reef. Good luck w him. They can be jumpers too so always keep that in mind, I’ve lost 4 to the jump throughout the years. Soo incredibly saddened me. Consider a lid if possible.

Had to evict mine too. Shown aggression towards other fish second day in my tank. What a bully!

I think these little boogers needs to be reclassified as Aggressive and minimum tank requirement to 100 gallons or something. LOL
