Midas Blenny Blended in MP 40

I had a blenny that would go into the MP40s when they were turned off - fortunately I always checked. There's no chance of that happening with the Gyre pumps that I use now.

I'm sorry this happened. Had a BTA wander and do the same one evening several years back.

I switched to Maxspect Gyre XF230's and never worry about those issues any longer as I did with the MP10's, 20's. and 40's. I do like the guards shown in the thread. It would be nice if EcoTech Marine made and offered these.

Maybe your thread will help others in the future. Again, sorry to read of your loss.

They're typically 3D printed and I've seen them at a few different places (although I don't recall where at). Here's one though..

Will change the flow - just keep that in mind. Restriction, dynamics, and of course extra maintenance for cleaning. Thing is you have to take in consideration the fish you plan to keep along with the water movement tools you implement into the tank. If you have active cave dwellers (blenny) then a power head with such a large opening may not be a good idea. No different than if you have strombus snails that are small. You have to look at everything to prevent mechanical failure or loss of fish and corals.

So sorry you lost your blenny, especially in that way. Just thought I would mention my experience with this. My tail spot blenny loves to swim inside the propeller cover for my Tunze Stream 3 powerhead when it is off, especially because it becomes a algae garden it cannot otherwise eat. However, the Stream 3 seems to have 2 features designed to prevent fish from getting blended in the propeller. First, in feed mode the propeller spins very very slowly, creating no flow but keeping inhabitants from going inside the cover. Second, when you do power it off completely and it comes back on, the propeller ramps up in speed slowly, with enough time for fish to get away. Not sure if these features were intended to keep fish safe, but in my observation they do. While the Stream 3 is not cheap, its been fantastic and given my positive experience with Tunze warranty service I'm confident that the 5 year warranty it comes with is worthwhile.

Ugh, I'm sorry for your loss. Fish have died because of my negligence before, and it makes it so much worse. But after the initial anger at myself, I just try to keep from repeating the same mistake. Looks like you're on the right track here . The covers you got look great! I rigged a couple wavemakers last year with some guards because my cleaner wrasse that I've had for around 7 years kept trying to dive into the fan. Ugh. It would've broken my heart had he succeeded.
