Sponges can smother corals by growing over them, but as long as it's just growing around the base it's fine. If you're concerned about it, you can cut/scrape that part of the sponge off and suction it out though.

Edit: just to add, sponge very rarely grow over corals - only a select few, rare, species actively grow over them.
 
My specimen of this sponge has grown to about the size of a golf ball. It will grow near, but not up to, corals, and seems to have a strong antialgal allelopathy, The area around the sponge being clear of ulva and hair algae, the two most prevalent in my tank
