Mildewy smell to fresh salt water container

Title says it all. I made up some water a couple weeks ago for a future water change....that would be tonight. I opened the lid and was blasted with this horrible mildewy smell. Any ideas? Is this water still safe to use?

Mine smells like an overused cat litter box!!! Horrible ammonia smell if I keep it lidded for any length of time... Before I use the mix I turn on the powerhead and heaters and remove the lid and the smell goes away after a few hours.

Grey Brute food grade trash can, RO/DI water with HW Marinemix Reefer salt mix. I was actually going to do a separate thread about it...

Is that a food grade trashcan? I thought (possibly incorrectly) that we should only use food grade trashcans for mixing new saltwater in...

Completely normal for mixed and stored SW.

As above, mine smells like cat pee after a few days. I too was worried about it, tested it, and it's juys a smell from storing the water. I was also told it's normal on a previous forum.

My RO/DI container smells like mildew, but TDS is still 0. In my previous mixing station, after a few months of use the smell went away. I honestly think it's just a smell from the new plastic, because after a few weeks of use it goes away.
