RO/DI water will work fine, or distilled water, for calibration of it.

A 35 ppt salinity standard intended for refractometers is a good way to check whether it is reading correctly, even if you just calibrated with 0 ppt water.

You can use any one intended for refractometers, and can use some that are intended for other devices (assumes they are a seawater mimic, not just a device specific standard).

My three DIY solutions (for hydrometers, refractometers, and conductivity meters) are all a bit different from one another:
