There should be no difference once calibrated. Just the red sea IME given time with no apparent outside force will drift from that calibration sooner then later.

100% agree. I calibrate it every single time I use it even if the last time was 15 minutes ago.

For what it's worth...

I'm pulling the trigger on the Pinpoint with the ac adapter.

Stays calibrated for along time, it's a conductivity measuring meter, nice digital display and you just have to drop the probe into water.

I hear ya

I'm just going to pull water out from the display in a water glass and let the probe sit in the glass of display water.
Then I'm going to put the pinpoint up until the next use, like mixing a new batch of saltwater.

I think you made a great call with the Vee Gee.

Funny that this thread came up. I ordered a Milwaukee earlier this week and I wasn't seeing consistent results from it.....1.032 then test it again and 1.020. I ordered a vee gee last night and it will be delivered tomorrow. I like being able to test things and see a consistent number and if I don't see it....I get scared off from a product.

I had been using Red Sea Refractometer and replaced my old one a month ago. My old one got to where it wouldn't hold a calibration while I was testing my tanks, so I purchased a new one and the new one was even worse than my old one. I swear I will put the 35 ppt solution it in...calibrate it, then go get my sample water and it will show high or low.......clean it off and put in the 35ppt solution again and then it will be down/up (will typically match what my sample was). I figured buying the Milwaukee would solve buying the red sea refractometers but it just wasn't consistent enough for me.......so Vee Gee here I come.

Just an FYI I also had a Milwaukee and just hated it. I had two older refactometers that gave consistent readings on 3 standards, I just thought the digital would be easier to use and faster... I have never had to calibrate the refractometers, but that Milwaukee gave inconsistent reading on all standards even back to back on same standard even when calibrating every time according to directions. Sold that sucker fast.

Have to say I've never had inconsistencies with the Milwaukee digital. My only complaint is the resolution isn't very high and wish it supported a two or more point calibration.

So I got my Triton test results back and I'm scratching my head on the salinity numbers vs my Milwaukiee 887 refractometer.

If I add up the Na, Ca, Mg, K from the Triton test, I get 12,435 which appears to be lower than 12,900 which would be 1.026.

Wow, I was going to create a topic for this. I had 1 bottle of Aquacraft solution which read about 1.028ppt on the Milwaukiee. I brought another bottle of it again incase first bottle was off + a bottle of pinpoint solution too. Both read 1.028.

So im guessing the Milwaukiee +2ppt, so I now mix salt on the Milwaukiee to read 1.028ppt to get a true 1.026ppt? anyone know if i would run into problems?

Im thinking of buying a Vee Gee Scientific STX-3 now to I guess.

Edit: Sometimes the Milwaukiee shows 1.027ppt too hmm

+1 on the VitalSine, liked it so much I purchased a second one. The first was stolen during a break in, I suppose they thought it was used for es the something else. The reading matches the Triton test and has on numerous occasions.

Yes, It is the exact same meter as @jason2459 stated. It is just re-branded for the Vital Sine name. Both of them are the Vee Gee.

Get the Vee Gee like @CoralNerd did and you'll be good to go.

I bought my Vital sine from BRS back when it was listed around the same price that the filter guys have the veegee listed for now.

It was also known then they are one and the same.

Veegee makes several models. The one available from The Filter Guys is the model you want which is a seawater refractometer.
