So many businesses in our Hobby come and go. Some take Just months to fail while others take years. But just like the restaurant business we see more fail than survive. If I could bring one back....Just one with the ability to make it work, it would be the Mindstream!!! I'm still not convinced that they ran out of funding. I think it was a conspiracy and someone bigger bought them, the tech and squashed it all for a way bigger reason. Once the Hydros Maven comes out, I'm sure I won't look back often. but still wonder

Sounded like a cool device. I can only imagine the science around the discs just didn't hold up in practice, or maybe the replacement disc cost was just too high in the end, and they knew people wouldn't pay up.

It was somewhere between a $30 to $50 a month subscription. I believe they also needed that to keep up the cloud service. The people that bought it seemed to really like them once the initial kinks were worked out. They suddenly folded without a really good reason on why. Like the OP said, some believe they were bought out and the tech was possibly used in other areas where their is a bigger payoff. They had some big investors so they may have wanted to get a payout sooner rather than later.

I'm not into all the gadgets. Just seems like a waste of money to me. The one product I used that I think was ahead of its time and I really liked was BML led light strips. They were out of Austin and they were one of the first to make LED light strips. On their website they had models to mimic the look of various metal halide bulbs such as 10k, 15k and 20k. They also had it setup so you could pick out your led strip light size and then pick out which led you wanted in each "spot" on the strip. So if you wanted all blue except for 1 red one in the middle you could do that on the website and then they would build it. Lights worked really well and I couldn't tell the difference between them and a t5bulb setup. They were a "side" business to their normal light business for horticulture. Unfortunately about 2 years in the pot growing business took off with it becoming legal in several states and they dropped the aquarium side of the business so they could keep up with the more profitable side. I think they then got bought out.

Thiel Aquatech made the most righteous skimmers. They may have been the first to use colored acrylic in their equipment? And they were pricey so they had to be good.

If you look at similar tech as the minstream you may get an idea of their troubles. Disc or probe, it proved to be a challenge. If one is suggesting a certain controller manufacture bought them up and squashed it that wouldn't be business savvy in this small market. Consolidation wasn't around in this timeline so the VC wasn't there to write off.

Traditional hobbyist, non employee types, won't really know not that it matters.

The color part made me sort of laugh. Color has to make it better :) I was thinking like putting a racing stripe on a car makes it go faster :) Teasing of course. Colored pvc and/or equipment some like similar to gear heads who chrome or anodize engine parts. It is a whole different level and attention to detail.
