Currently mid cycle with my new set up which can be found here.

Im starting to put together my fish list and have put some thought towards aggression/hiding spots. I opted for a minimalist type aquascape to allow a large amount of swimming room above my reef.

Looking at it now Im wondering if this will hinder my ability to house a higher number of fish or mix certain fish (example 2 dwarf angels) as there wont be anywhere to run and hide and there will be limited real estate to claim as their own.

Does anyone have any experience or insight to offer?

All my little fishes such as chromis, blenny, and dottyback goes into their hiding spot at night when my lights turned off. I get the feeling that this make them feel safe and happy.

Based on this, from now on if I ever set up another tank. I will always make sure there are plenty of hiding spots for my fishes.

My yellow tang and tomato clownfish never seem to hide however. I guess it depends on the type of fish.

Also, when my tomato was chasing my anthias. The anthias would run around the rockwork to lose him. I would imagine that in an open aquarium, the tomato would only give up the chase only if he gets tired.

My tank has a regular warren of hiding places. But if a fish takes a real dislike for another, plenty of hiding places does not offer protection. It helps with moderate or half hearted aggression.

Open swimming space can lead to more bullying and singling out. However, more fish will spread said aggression.

I'm all for more fish. Sounds like a wait and see type thing. Good news is that it's easier to add than subtract when it comes to rock work IMO
