Minimum Live Rock In Scape..Use Media In Sump?

Morning. If I'm planning on doing a minimalistic scape should I plan on using some sort of bio-media in the sump area and if so what's the suggestions?

Seachem pond matrix is what I have in the sump. You can bag it or just lay it in the bottom. Just remember to give it a good blow with a blaster or power head when you water change. If it’s bagged, just shake it out in your old tank water. Some use marine pure blocks in the sump. I’ve never tried them.

Pond matrix will help you, I would stay away from the marine pure blocks though. I believe they leach aluminum and perhaps other metals. I tried them once and noticed nothing for nitrate reduction and the day I pulled them out my corals seemed to look happier..

The amount of stuff you will need in your sump will depend on your fish load. More fish produce more ammonia requiring more bacteria on media to process. If you plan on having a light fish load, even a minimalist rock scape would probably work.
