Hey all,
I am currently using miracle mud in my r300 eshopps sump coming up on 1 year and was curious about pros and cons of replacing yearly or not? Id like not to kill out my pod colony in replacing . I currently have some rubble , chaeto ,tiger pods in refugium with the miracle mud . Mud is about 4” in depth .
Thanks!

Never heard of miracle mud. Someone will chime in soon.
Yes , I am sure someone will chime in. It’s early east coast time. I woke up to too early this morning before headed out for work . yes you know your reef tank is too addictive when your thinking about Miracle Mud at 4:30 in the a.m.!
Miracle Mud is supposedly be great addition to your fuge. I have had issues with 0 nitrates and phosphates of late that I’ve lost some of my sps.
I can’t tell if mud has been beneficial to my new reef tank though . I dose acro power as well with a light bioload.

4 inches? Miracle mud should only be 1-1,1/2 inches deep. After 2 years you're supposed to change 50% and then change 50% every year from then on. Miracle mud is a slightly different product to mineral mud. At a depth of 4 inches it's possible you may get a build up of hydrogen sulphide due to a very anoxic condition. Mine's coming up to 2 years next February so I'll start saving to buy 15 lbs of the stuff.

I would leave it or as in my case add new nud on top of existing. I added a little more when i used it

It’s closer to 3” actually after putting a tape on it. The refugium compartment isn’t huge in the r 300 and I went by MM per gallon instructions I thought I actually needed more . 5lbs. My buddy that owns a LFS in Asheville come by and help me set up .
Okay, I thought it was 1 year in changing out 50%. I was assuming it would be the same as a DSB in there but I get in trouble when I assume ! Haha! Thanks for chiming in.
John, Have you seen an results ?

Okay, That’s what I was leaning in doing since I have a ton of copepods . Thank you for your input vetteguy.

I would just leave it since Chaeto doesn’t even put roots in therefore wouldn’t be using the nutrients from it. Also given it’s not required to grow algae at all then what is being achieved by replacing some other than spending money you don’t need to?

Don’t get me wrong I have used it and my pod population was great and algae grew great but I don’t believe that it really needs replacing I think that’s marketing to sell you more. You can grow algae bare bottom.. if replacing makes any impact it’s probably removing pods and disturbing the balance you have already achieved IMO.
