Hey guys, I got this fish that came in labeled as an engineer goby but I don’t think that’s right. He looks more like a blenny to me. Any ideas what he might be?

I had our engineer goby since it was a juvenile and it definitely did not look like that.

Looks more like a species of gudgeon dartfish.

I'm going with Curious Wormfish, or Yellow Stripe Wormfish. Looks like there are several kinds.

Edit: Changing my guess to what Mr. Knightley says below.

That's a Bluestripe Fangblenny, they mimic cleaner wrasses and bite bits off of large fish. It should be safe with fish around it's size but I wouldn't risk it as they nip at the gills and fins of larger fish.

Definitely not an engineer; that I do know…I think haha

Bluestripe Fangblenny

Thank you guys so much! I know dang well that he wasn’t an engineer goby. I just didn’t know where to start as far as researching him. Sometimes, trying to figure out what specific type of fish you’re looking at can be so overwhelming.

Do you guys think he be okay with a pair of clowns, a cryptic (pink streaked) wrasse, and a pipefish? The pipefish worries me most because she’s a similar shape and longer atm; around 4.5/5inches. Currently, the fangblenny is like 2.5in.

or would he be better off with a cherub angle, Springer’s damsel, and a single true percula clown?

I've never owned a Bluestripe blenny myself so I can't comment on that, but they are naturally semi-parasitic and nip the fins of other fish. I'm not sure if it would be okay with small fish, I think it would though. Check it out online if you can, sorry I can't help!

what $&@! did they send me…I thought he was just cute and playing with me. Noooope. Now that I think about it, I’m pretty sure he was trying to bite me.

They have huge teeth to bite others with. They are pretty but probably best in a tank with no other fish.
