I'm fairly new to the hobby and put a couple Pederson Cleaner Shrimp and a Diamond Watchman Goby as well as the below livestock in the tank. The Goby plowed around the tank for a couple days before finding a spot he liked under a rock. He would stick his head out occasionally and slowly got used to me being around the tank. The Shrimp found their way to a low flow area on the sand and seemed content wandering around, occasionally they would try to clean the Goby or the Tang but generally they just hung out.

A few days ago I noticed the shrimp were nowhere to be found, and since then I've not seen them. Same goes with the Goby but he's only been MIA for two days. Question is, is this normal? There are plenty of places all of them could hide where I might not see them, esp the Shrimp as they're pretty small.

Thanks for the help!

That's a lot of fish in a 30g over the course of just a few days. I predict will you have aggression issues at some point but it's normal for them to hide in the beginning.

Gobys will jump out so if you don't have a tight fitting lid....it's probably jerky.

The cardinal fish may pair off then attack the 3rd so watch for that and remove the loser.

Also the dottyback will eat the shrimp and are mean in small overstocked tanks. I would remove this fish entirely.

Always a good idea to check the overflow and sump for any missing fish. Good luck!

Canister filter so no overflows to worry about. The lid doesn’t cover all of the tank but most of it. The Goby never got close to the top of the tank before but I suppose he could have jumped out. Cat could have eaten it. Seems unlikely though.

Thanks for the unsolicited advice on the tank setup too. I’ll keep it all in mind.

I added them together expecting it would tamp any aggression issues, we’ll see though.

Ironically, literally this evening, the tang attacked the cardinals taking the tail fin completely off of one and nipping parts of the others off. Needless to say, I’m one cardinal and one tang down this evening ‍♂️
