Hey all so im not exacly sure the exact smell but it smells kinda like a dead fish. went to the fish store they told me di resin sometimes smells like that. But my freshwater barrel smells like nothing. Also the barrel only smells like it when the pump is running. I've tested the water theres only a nitrate of 2 in the barrel everything else is 0. is it the pump going bad or what could it be? Its a 7 stage rodi setup just btw.

When you say pump - do you mean mixing pump?

here’s what the mixing setup looks like

it is a mixng pump i use it to pump the water through the barrels or through the hose i use for water changes
That's probably something I'd change. I'd keep a dedicated pump for your mixing station and a separate one (as well as any hoses) for your water changes.

I had a smell of cat urine in mine and rinsed with bleach and water and all the odor gone

I know this is an old post, but looking for answers…
Did the cat pee smell ever come back? I have this problem. I left mixed water in my Brute, noticed the smell so emptied all saltwater, cleaned the can out and replaced with RODI and no salt and the smell is back. I’m doing something wrong, I’m assuming.

Time to use bleach/water mixture
I remember about 5 years ago when I used brutes telling my daughter to clean her cats litter box more often as the area smelled like cat pee
She insisted she cleaned it often ,,, and when I opened the lid on the container - holy moly, it was not her cat
Bleach mixture resolved it

Wow I’m surprised I came across this without searching. My brute I use for kalk reeks of cat urine. I don’t plan to do anything

I would personally try and get a new brute sometimes it will leech into the plastic and not come out if it’s not food grade. However my issue seemed to be with the pump when I changed my pump smell went away possible that some things can grow in the pump causing the smell.

There is literally nothing preventing water that is free from chlorines/chloramines from growing microbes, I would assume even moreso with the right elements. No? And the thing is, they arent going to come out in the water, they are growing inside the pump and tank.

Thanks! And then after the bleach mixture, rinse and add water immediately? Or wait? Just don’t want to kill anything lol

It is a new 32g but I’m wondering if the pump and line are growing something so I’ll def replace them. I’ll do the bleach water clean and see if the combo fixes the problem.

I cold water rinse
