I am looking for the experiences of people who mixed different types of jacks. For example pompanos, trevallies, look-downs, scads... I was wondering if they schooled for you.

good luck finding an answer. who has a tank large enough for a school of these fish?

I have golden trevally and look downs and they school together.

Why do you say that? Lots of people have large tanks.

Because the golden trevally can get to a max size of 120cm(47.25in). Can't keep something like that in a 1000g tank. Not many people on this site have tanks large enough to keep these size fish.

Yes i agree, not many people are going to have that info. Just because its cute at 2" doesnt mean it belongs in aquaria.

And What a water fowling appetite. I would stick to the lookdowns, everything else is more like table fare than aquarium fish.

A 3ft trevally is similar to a 8 ft man. They might be out there but you will never find one. If you can find me more then 1 picture of a trevally that is 120cm I will admit I don't know what I am talking about. There are fish in the jack family which stay much smaller then the golden trevally.

A few examples from the 1st page of the large reef section. I keep my fish in a 12ft intex pool. If there are people with large enough tanks for all the tangs which are sold there are large enough tanks for fish in the jack family.

Not saying you shouldn't keep one. Just saying there aren't many people on this site with a tank big enough to house a fish of that size.

But, for what it's worth, I don't buy a fish based on the average size of its species, but rather on the worst case scenario. I do this because IF the fish reaches this size, I don't want to have to give it up. I'm its caretaker and would feel just as bad giving the fish away as taking a dog or cat to a shelter.

In this case, the worst case scenario for a golden trevally per fishbase is 120cm with an average of 75cm. For a fish of that length to comfortably turn around at full length, you need a pretty wide tank. Even at 75cm, that means a tank at least 3 feet wide.

A better species of trevally, I would guess, is the Coastal trevally(Carangoides coeruleopinnatus) with a max length of 41cm. Still a large fish, but easier to house in a 900 gal tank.

Again, just sharing my opinion on the subject. I'm not the tang/large fish police and have no problems with people keeping large fish. It's your money and tank, do as you see fit. Just don't expect others to see it that way.
