I think my test kit isn't great. My lfs has water for 1.00 per gallon, which is actually cheaper than what I just bought

It should not be the salt that causes the ph. I hate to say it but I never check ph. I used to chase it and I was going crazy. I keep the calcium, magnesium, and kh consistent and the ph is within 8.2 and 8.4. Oddly enough ph is a result of all three mentioned above. I would get your water issue sorted out and then everything else will fall into place. You had asked if I used cold and warm water to mix. I know others chimed in, with good advice, but I don't worry about heating the water until the day I plan to use it. I live in Southern California, so my water doesn't get too cold at room temperature.

i bought 8 gallons of ro/di water at my lfs today for 8 bux. ill go with this from now on.
