I just made enough water for my 13.5 Fluval and in the last batch I noticed the container I was using (metal one used for boiling over a propane setup for cooking/beer making) that there was some metal "dust" in the bottom of it after dumping it into a mixing container (13 gallon trash can). I am having second thoughts about using this water for mixing salt in. What are others thoughts? This will be the first fill as I am still putting the tank together. In advance, thank you for your time reading and replying.

Dont think I would use it just my opinion see what everyone else has to say

Metal dust could be anything, and it doesn't make sense to use an RODI system only to contaminate the water before you use it. Aluminium? Teflon flakes? Leftover foil wrappings from last year's BBQ? A little contaminant in your homebrew is one thing, but for sensitive marine life, start the tank right with known good clean water.

Fill the trash can directly with RODI water.
A better idea would be to go to the hardware store and buy some 5 gallon buckets or a small brute trash can that is dedicated for only mixing and storing water.

Yeah... I was thinking the same thing... I am glad I noticed. Only thing that has been in it was one batch of beer but the stainless metal dust probably not a good idea for delicate fish... the ol gut with beer... we drink probably worse as far as metal goes from the faucet. Thanks... Going to dump it out and start over.

Just dumped the water, ran a paper towel in the bottom of the can and am making the RO/DI directly into the 13.3 gallon can now. No need to chance it and start with a failure before the tank even gets water. Thanks for confirming it is better to be patient and safe than in a hurry and throwing caution to the wind.
