Mixing salt by weight or volume?

Hello,

Is it possible to always get the same salinity when mixing the same amount of salt either by weight or volume? or you always have to micro adjust and keep testing to get your desired salinity?

I have for a long time gone by weight. Comes out so spot on that I admit I stopped checking the salinity.

Generally between 750-800 grams to five gallons for the salts I’ve used.

Personally I have not measured salt in years. I have brute cans, once filled half way I drop in a pump and start pouring in salt. I have an rough idea of how much bag I use and how clear the water is to get close, then I slowly adjust once almost filled until the refractometer shows correct levels.

Measuring is too much work, if you have a smaller tank though measuring would be needed.

I thought constantly checking the refracto was too much. Lol.

About 5 gallons and about 5 scoops then test and add a little salt or a little rodi until in at 1.023 or 1.024 with an old inaccurate swing arm. Mix overnight for WC next day and test with refractometer to make sure it's at 1.025 or 1.026. I dont worry about matching exactly since a .001 difference in salinity makes no impact when it's only a 10-20% WC.

I weight the 1/2 cup measuring cups on a jewelers scale into a small bucket. I bought the scale for dosing nutrients into my planted tank. One day ill get a scale that can weight more than this at one time [emoji23]

Im glad its not just me!

I have never ever tested the salinity of the new saltwater. I currently use Red Sea Standard salt (also used coral pro) and basically mix at a rate of 38.2g per litre and then just add it to my system and Ive never had an issue.

I guess with smaller Nano systems it might be worth checking, and I suppose it may also depend on the reliability of the salt mix being used.

I measure by weight and rarely have to adjust. I have a salinity meter in my mixing/storage tank so it does the measuring for me if I bother to turn it on.
