Mixing salt with live sand in tank

why do we buy live sand then?

Mostly marketing. If live sand was at all necessary, barebottom tanks wouldn't exist. Maybe you are adding some biodiversity and maybe you are helping the tank cycle or reach stability faster but it's certainly not any real measurable or noticeable difference.
