Hi,

its me again with another newbie question... I had started making the ro water for my 300 litre tank and trying to figure out how to mix the salt. My first thought was to mix it in separate 80 litre buckets and then add it to the tank and the other option was to just mix it in the tank, but my worry is that some of it could settle in sand or rocks not dissolving properly.

What are you thoughts on this?

Hoping to hear from you guys soon :)

Are you just setting up the tank? Or does it have fish in it?

You can do it either way if it’s empty, but given the choice I would use the mixing bucket then you have no worries about it laying around. It should dissolve anyway eventually

My suggestion would be to mix it outside the tank.
I have always ran my RODI water and then mixed in the tank but would do it with only the return pump and powerheads in the tank. Then, would come the rocks and sand - but I was always playing the game of remove a bit of water and adding some back to try to account for the water displacement the rocks and sand caused.

If rocks are not "live", then you can heat the newly created saltwater in the tank and not have to worry about die-off

Outside the tank. Some salt mixes leave residue in the mixing container, which isn’t a huge deal but you wouldn’t want it in your display. It’s also easier to finalize rock and sand when the tank has like 1/3 of its water rather than full, so filling it in stages can help there also.
