So today I finally decided to stop using filter cartridges and add dry rock rubble along with a little 1oz bag of carbon using bulk carbon and pantyhose.

The rock is supposed to act as the bio filter or at lease that's what I read and the carbon is to help with the fish smell. And the reason for using tea hob is mainly for water movement on the top.

What is all your thoughts about this???

I did this with an old HOB. Worked great!
Your rubble rock will act as a bio filter although it will also trap detritus and possibly cause nitrate and/or phosphate issues down the track if it's not cleaned out often enough. Personally I'd take the rock out and just run the carbon. Leave the bio filtration to the rock in the tank.
I ran carbon and a filter sponge in my HOB. I used the sponge later with a little yukky stuff on it to help cycle another tank, just squeezed the juice out and wedged it between 2 rocks an left for a week or so and it kicked my cycle along quite well.

I run my carbon through a hob and it works great.
