Hey Everyone,

My tank has goten over run with Mojo's, I have tried a Mojo Wand, but just too many to do. I thought of just getting rid of the live rock and replace with new, but way to expensive for me to do right now. I have this thought of getting a rubbermaid bin and putting a pump and a skimmer in it, and putting all my live rock in it and putting it in the basement, keeping it in the dark for a few weeks. But I want to know is will this work to get rid of the mojos? Or will all the live things in the rock die too? If so it won't be live rock anymore. I'm looking for any ideas on getting rid of these pesky Mojos. They are taking over my life and killing all my corals in my tank. Im ready to j get out of the hobby and teardown the tank. I've just lost all interest in it. HELP !!!!!

Hate to say it but the only way I know of to kill off a huge infestation would be to tear it down. A local public aquarium had a manjo outbreak, they dragged the ends.of the old growth SPS, saved what they could, and now are tearing it down

It's not easy but...
Take out all the live rock put it in some rubber made or trash can and fill it with rodi water or distilled.
And lave it for a few days. Ull kill everything in ur rocks tho.
After a few days drain all the water and leave the rock some where.
Clean what ever u had the rock in very well.

Then make a fresh batch of salt water. Put ur live rock back in and put a skimmer on it.
Shake the rock around real well and use a powerhead to blow into the rock to try and get everything out.
That skimmer will be going crazy for a few days bc there will be a lot of slime and what not coming off of it...

Best of luck to u

My 100G went from this:

To this because of Mojanos.

I had to take all the rock out and cook it in closed dark rubbermaid tubs for 6 weeks and even then they still popped up for about a year but I stayed after them and they are all gone now. Don't put it off, mine started with 2 or 3 on a piece of rocak way down in back where I could not reach them so I ignored them. HUGE MISTAKE!! Do it now.

Distilled will be best but its going to cost you more.
Distilled kill everything fast bc it will make everything become hypotonic. Fill with fresh water and the cells will pop and die

Let me know if u have any questions about this I have help my buddy do this before and I did this while I serviced aquariums

I cooked mine in new saltwater to preserve the bacteria and some life still on the rocks. After the cooking process some Mojano's were stil alive so I zapped them with a squirt bottle of vinegar or a syringe of vinegar or kalk paste and they died right off. Distilled or RO/DI would have killed all the coralline algae and beneficial bacteria.

At the point he is at tho I would rather kill off all my coraline and live bac and start fresh. He will still have live back in his sand and in his sump. He just needs to be carful not to over load yhe system

Thank You everyone for your info. I think I will go the route of taking all the rock out and put in tub or trash cans. So sorry about your tank AZDesertRat your tank was beautyfull before those da*n mojos. Is your tank back up and mojo free?..... Mrfresh so you think my live rock will seed again when I put it back in the tank with the things that are in my sand bed.

Yes the rock will become live rock after a few weeks, just be sure to keep ur bio load light while the rock becomes live again....

There is debate about how long it takes rock to become live rock but just play it safe for a little while.

Good luck

Yes my tank is thriving again and it did not take long as I did not kill my rock with fresh water which to me makes no sense. I spent good money on Kealini live rock directly from the importer and went to the airport freight terminal and picked it up myself. Cooking was sufficient to kill most and the few stragglers that were left were easy to get with kalk paste.

Just wondering what is MOJO....

It's a horrible pest they sting anything that gets to close to it and if u don't kill it the right way it will release eggs and spread like wild fire, there really small anenomes.

Majano anenomes is the full name if u want to look it up

My matted filefish took care of my infestation.
I thought they ate Aiptasia not majo's

You could go that way to but u have to be careful with feedings if u feed to much the fish will get used to eating food u feed and not look for them, and sometimes there a hit or miss fish.

I tried a pair of Matted File Fish. They had no interest in the Mojos. After a couple months they came up missing. I just read Peppermint Shrimp will eat mojo's.

file fish n peppermint shrimp, they both r good for controlling apt n mojo. Although they live in the ocean as their natural habitat. U might lucky find one that will in aquarium. I have a few local reefer friend end up tearing down system to start fresh w my help before, after ~a year of trying...
IMO, mr fresh is right on spot w a solution for ur problem.
one more important tip, when u buy live stocks, NEVER INTRODUCED THAT WATER IN UR SYSTEM, cause u dont know what is in it....
good luck.

maybe a dumb question but cant you just pull the rock out and let them dry out with the sun for about a week? and then just cycle the rock again?

that is an alternative method, not necessarily be a week. I did 3 days sun burn the rocks and pre wash with strong water stream from garden hose, if u have presure washer would be best then start cycle rocks again...
