I have heard that mollies are really good at algae control and I have seen that tangs are great at algae. I have 2 mollies in a freshwater tank right now and I'm just waiting for my tank to be fallow for 90 days because of marine velvet. My mollies have VERY similar behavior to tangs so I was just curious about mollies compared to tangs. Also I know tangs are a lot bigger so they probably eat more but I'm just curious.

Mollies will eat 10x the algae compared to tangs .
but I believe there is a specific algae they prefer .

Tangs will out eat mollies . Tangs will eat surface, filament algae, macro algae and hair algae
Mollies will eat biofilms that lead to algae growth as well as surface algae

Mollies are cheaper, readily available and and come in a variety of colors

mollies do do a decent job of eating some algae in my experience, but then you have mollies in your tank taking up space for tangs...

what I dole about them is that they know when he auto feeder has kicked in and triggers the feeding frenzy for the others...
I use them for cleaning my QT tank too
