So I came across this guy tonight while viewing the tank about an hour before the blues come on. It's about 1/2 - 3/4" long, very dark almost black in color and appears to be a snail with a very soft, flat shell of some sort. Pics were taken with a cell phone, so not the best quality but perhaps someone can make something of it?

The picture is terrible.....google Scutus and see if that is what you have.

Is that a black stomatella snail?

Yeah, I know the pictures are awful. Couldn't get phone to focus and by the time I got upstairs to get real camera he was gone.

That being said, scutus is close, but they seem to be flatter and have a white stripe down their back. Mine appears to be more slug-like, cylindrical and no stripe.

Oh yeah? Only ever heard of them, no real knowledge of them. Hopefully there's more than one!

Tanks been up for a year and I haven't added any new rock since startup. Maybe came in on some chaeto - all my frags get dipped.
Part of it is stomatella only come out at night and they're very quick moving. So hard to detect unless you're scanning the tank at night.

Nice. I'll have to be on the lookout! Thanks for the info.
They're awesome! I was excited to find my first one, now I have about 8 that I have seen. Different colors too, one is a beautiful pearlescent pink. Hopefully you can catch them spawning sometime, they jet sperm into the water column. Very cool to watch.
