About a week ago I thought I lost a member of my awesome clean up crew. Found an emerald crap on its back, the shell was split top/bottom on the back. Found another this morning split exactly the same way. Scooped it out and didn't look like a whole lot inside. Could these be from them molting? All the legs and arms were completely intact.

Yup, molting! Unless they don't show up again...! Instinct tells them to hide out for a couple of days after they molt as that is when they are still soft and most vulnerable to predation.

Don't know about emerald crabs but when my coral banded shrimp molts it looks like a whole other shrimp; other than being more translucent and having a split in it.

It’s the same, I have emeralds and coral banded shrimp, both look like the whole thing just a little translucent.
