today was almost all spent on electrical, running wire, new circuits, GFI galore, t5 lighting under the stand and behind the tank and entrance to room and switches to control most things. i wanted three 20A circuit and circuit GFI triggered together. it took a lot time and still not done.

sourced a used 160g vertical storage container and some HCl for the 400+lbs of rock i need to clean!
instead of using two 160g i am going to do the 160 and one 55, saltwater and fresh respectively.

he pocket door rail track and rollers arrived today. i love me some mcmaster!

ok, it's bed time for me but i got a ton of stuff done today and wanted to post up. i'm too tired to explain or provide captions so it's just going to be a bunch of photos that perhaps seem random. if i'm motivated in the AM maybe i'll try to go back and edit. otherwise, ask away and i'll reply to what happened and what i got done. thanks for checking my build out!

all this work for a temporary set up with the fuge. got the new broodstock tank going and decided to remove the sump it had and instead tied it in line with the 46 upstairs and swapped to a panworld 250PS pump which holy cow moves water. too much for the skimmer to work efficiently. can't wait to get my real sump from adam. officially need sleep. ok here are some photos. nighty night.

so got my overflow recently so i can continue to do some work on the build again. picked that up and some dow 795 for the internal and external overflow boxes. the dow black silicone is going to be a new product i use but have heard excellent reviews on it.
i feel a lot more confident using a building sealant for the external overflow and the black will blend nicely i think over the typical clear solutions out there.
waiting on estimates from some local glass shops to pick up the pieces for the external box. was going to go acrylic but after consulting with adam and a few others we all agreed it's best in glass. will have to take a look at evan's build thread again for some ideas on thicknesses. and size.
any one have input on size of the external overflow box? the internal is 48" long. i was thinking of a 24 or 36" length external with 4-5 1" bulkhead size openings for flow through and make it big enough for the herbie overflow obviously but perhaps a bit larger as to have an acclimation "mini tank" for new arrivals to the DT after QT. maybe grow some mangroves in there or something unique.
was thinking of a 36x6x12"...input, ideas?
i plan to support it just as a precaution with a small stand that will come off the DT stand.

i felt horrible about it but my dad is almost a foot shorter than i and it was considerably easier for him to fit in there to help me get the work done than it would be for my 6'3" self attempting to do the same...

the internal overflow will have four to five holes drilled in the back pane of the DT that will feed an external overflow box made of glass that is not shown in the photos. still finalizing the measurements but am thinking of 36" x 7" x 12". i want to be able to use for fuss-free acclimation of corals and fish post QT but prior to entering the DT and as possible place to grow mangroves. like a mini tank.
i'll be running a herbie. there will be no plumbing in the internal overflow. just did not want to use a weir'd box like everyone else. i wanted a wide highly efficient surface skimming a true sheet of water off the top while saving as much room as possible, providing as much light as possible and having it look nice and clean and not cumbersome.

ordered my external over glass. did it all in 3/8" non-tempered plate glass with polished edges. ordered from laurel glass (they had the best pricing by $40). banner, dulles etc wanted around $104-175 and laurel quoted me $59. friendly service and hopefully they get the measurements right and polish the edges nicely.
i went with a 30" x 5.5" x 12" external overflow.
i wanted the 3/8" for rigidity on the bottom with the bulkheads and for the strength on the larger 30" glass in case i accidentally lean on it or put pressure on it, basically for peace of mind.
5.5" depth allows over an 1" on each end of the 2.5" bulkhead openings for drains of the bean animal. 30" give me plenty of room for acclimation, time-out space, etc and to water to dial in the bean animal.

it was the least messy way i could figure of doing it. each hole in the tank took about 30 minutes to drill. i just knew a water bottle or similar was going to be more annoying then helpful and still create a bit of a mess.
i cracked the bottom pane of the external overflow testing (it's almost the same thickness of the tank) and constant flowing water was really needed. so i ordered another pane for the bottom of the external overflow, drill those holes for the bean outside with a hose and got to figuring out how to do the back pane of the tank without having a flood of glass-water. the above was the best thing my father and i came up with and it worked out really well. there was still some spray from the bit shooting water out in a circular pattern but it was minimal and 95% of the water made it down our trash bag funnel and into the planter to be pumped back up.

wanted to create enough room above the tank so i could get larger/taller pieces of rock into the tank, have some extra space for headroom and possible shelves or electrical so i ripped our the drywall above.
with the stand being much higher than typical, and the tank being 24" i was only left with about 14" or room to the ceiling prior to my "modification". now i have about 27" which is great!
still need to move the junction box, clean up the edges of the drywall, and will likely seal everything above as well but you get the idea.

oh forgot to mention, the first hole from the back pane to the external overflow box took me 25 minutes or so, the next about 35, and the third about 47 minutes. because i felt the bit becoming tough to work with on the third hole i decided to wait and purchase a new bit for the last one. the last hole i did in under 6 minutes, haha. goes to show what a new bit can do. glad i waited and didn't rush to get the last hole done and possibly crack my tank.
