Mono Angelfish

So I got some fish of kijij yesterday, I got a great deal because I got it all .

The fish includ

1 Sailfin tang 4inch
1 Neso tang 4 inch
1 Fancy clown fish 2 inch
1 Blue Linckia starfish
1 Choclate chip starfish
1 Short black urchin
1 Yellow belly damsel (R.I.P)
3 Mono angelfish

He had the Mono Angelfish's for over 7 years with other Tangs and so on . But I've been looking at saltwater tanks and I NEVER see anyone with Mono Angelfish . Is that because they are aggressive or just not eye candy like other saltwater Angelfish . Personally I wouldn't have chosen them .. who has Mono Angelfish?? They are with my Moorish Idol.

I think typically because they are brackish water fish.

They are typically brackish water, but can be kept in full salt. They also aren't very good "wow" fish so not many people keep them.

I think its because they are not that attractive. I've seen people with very large tanks use them as a schooling fish, they are very inexpensive and can provide movement. If you like schooling fish and have a tank like in the 450g range, they are ok. In a smaller tank, not so much.

I like them for the reasons @lion king stated.

In the wild they form large schools near the coasts.

A lot of similar looking fish are not as tolerant with conspecifics.

Full salt is not an issue with adults, their life cycle. The adults swim up river and the young gradually make their way back to ocean. This may play a part in why they are not as common as other fish. How many are going to take a juvenile and slowly turn a freshwater tank to full marine?

That and i believe they are not 100% coral safe and may nip at polyps.

They aren't actually angelfish, although they look more like a freshwater angel. They can get fairly big, up to 12" in the wild, probably 8" in a suitable tank. I have had one in my salt tank since it was about 2", and it has grown to about 6" over a few years. What I like about is that it gets a diamond shape as it grows. They are schooling fish in the wild, but I only have the one. He likes to pal around with a large golden rabbit fish that grew up with him. It's peaceful and likes veggies.

Have you guys ever known of anyone to just place the young fish in saltwater water and skip the freshwater stage?

Have you guys ever known of anyone to just place the young fish in saltwater and skip the fresh water stage? I think it is a pretty cool fish. I see them in a lot of large aquariums.

I would match the shipping bags specific gravity to start. Evolutionary speaking they have evolved to be juveniles in rivers and swim back to the ocean for millions of years. Id give it some juvenile time.
