This has been inevitable for awhile now, I was hoping they just wouldn't grow into each other

I'd rather the bonsai win but i'm thinking the monti cap will. Anyone have experience with this particular battle? I suppose I'll just break off some of the monti cap but it grows so fast anyways.

Not the EXACT same battle, but I have a bonsai that is battling with my Mind Trick Montipora...Bonsai is winning, but the mind trick is big enough that the bonsai will never overtake it.

Cool! This at least gives me hope! I wonder if monti cap or undata is more aggressive, I guess we will find out.

Neither... both will stop encrusting when they get close. That is my guess and have seen it a lot in my tank.

I was going to vote for a truce and a DMZ between them also.

Awesome, thanks guys. Good to hear from experienced sps keepers. First time this particular problem has occurred for me.

If they do cause damage, then the answer is the the Bonsai wins since most people prefer it to the cap... and caps can regrow elsewhere with much ease. In the end, the reefer takes the bone cutters to the monti and ensures that the bonsai lives. Just IMO.

This is why I have a no Montipora rule in my tank (except for Leng Sy cap).

It means you're doing something right! Post pics when they encounter each other!

Here they are at first light today, so they are definitely figuring it out right now. You can see some slime or something rather going on. I'm going to keep an eye on it and if the Bonsai starts to recede i'll chisel that monti up.

Update:

The Garf is definitely killing the Monti Cap off. You can see some algae starting to grow on the dead skeleton of the monti and even the Garf starting to encrust over it. The monti cap also just moved its growth line back and then out, looks like its going to try and go over it. Kinda cool.

I really miss my valida now.

In my tank the acropora push harder, and always win. But Mother Nature has a funny way of delivering karma.
I should have taken a picture before chisling away, I had ORA Red Planet growing intothen eventually killing the edges of a red montipora capricorus. The Red Planet started to encrust and branch off of the dying plates of the monti. After a few months of struggling the montipora started to send plates up and over the acropora, shading it out.
It was very cool to watch this slow motion warfare. If i had not intervened the monti would have done a fair job of overcoming its lack of strength with enginuity.
