Monti Cap vs Tubs Stellata vs Digi

I have a Tubs Stellata frag I am thinking about mounting on a rock next to to a Monti Cap. The Monti cap is big and getting bigger and would be close to the Stellata in no time. Also thinking of mounting an orange digi I have near the Stellata.

Will it become an issue when they grow into each other or would they be compatible?

They will definitely fight when they grow into each other. Even if they dont really sting or fight when they come into contact, I think the red monti cap will just over grow and smother the digi and stellata since montis caps grow so fast.

I am not worried about them growing over each other. More worried about them stinging and killing each other.

Best practices says to give each coral enough space to grow into , they will fight if in contact and depending on your tank , and other parameters , it may cause very unfavorable results for even those not in contact.

I get that and I have spaced everything near each other that would have a best chance of survival. However, not all corals will fight when they make contact. There are many corals that just touch with killing their neighbor. I asked because all three of these corals are forms of Montipora and you would think they might be better compatible near each other than others.

They are not, the Stella will win hands down, IME.

@watdachuck Has caps, digis, and stellatas. The digi overtook some of his Acros, and its encroaching on a number of others. He found that the stellata kills the digi, so he placed a frag of the stellata onto the digi, and the stellata is growing over the digi while killing it. Now, he has to figure out how he will stop the stellata.

This is happening in close proximity to his large caps, but I can’t recall if they have yet contacted each other. Maybe he can chime in with information and post some photos for you to see.

It would be interesting to see the Stella go up against a spongodes.

I’ve learned my lesson with a M. Spongodes years ago....

I will follow up with some photos. The unique situation I have protecting further expansion of the Stellata as it "digests" the digi is the Monti caps adjacent to them have grown so large they are shading any chance of the Stellata or digi taking over too far.

IME monti caps will not only just try to overgrow another coral but are quite the capable stingers as well. We had simple red monti cap nearly wipe out a purple and a really nice chalice.

Give them all plenty of room. In this case them being from the same genus does not mean they will all play nice.

I have a grafted cap monti and that thing started taking over anything in its path so it had to get popped off and moved and before it grew that much it had plenty of room all my corals did caps just grow fast also have a different cap that grew into 2 acro and killed off the section of Acro it grew into but the acro is growing above where the cap grew into
