Monti dying back, do you trim?

I had a monti die back several months ago, for the last few months though it has just lived, no new growth as others continue to grow.

Is it necessary to trim off the die off or just let it be?

Either way is fine. The monti will grow over it with time but while it’s not growing algae will grow on it and it looks pretty gross to me.
