My cap isn't growing out, it's growing at the base and here soon it will push itself up without the help of the plug. I am wondering if it is safe to frag the base or will it not survive?

Don't mind the crag... it's their new hiding spot -.-

I usually cut the post of the plug off and then attach frag base to rock work with super glue gel and jb water weld. The coral will usually encrust from there and then take off with the upward growth. FWIW, my red cap grows WAY slower than my purple, green and flower petal.

I am trying to trim the coral without the look :P eh the base doesn't have that much color so I wouldn't think it would survive. just wondering if people think differently.

Huh my red grows faster then my purple rainbow and Jedi

But I don't know how to frag them so I am following along to see what to do

I'm thinking about trying to frag what is growing and see what happens.. might do this tonight ... after I study for my anthropology class.

If a cap is growing downward it means there is too much light. Try lowering it in your tank. Red cap in my system grows like a weed and requires regular pruning. Check your calcium and alkalinity too. But with the faded color it is showing I really think it is the lighting.

Here are a couple of photos of some red montis (one is a graft). Also a FTS so you can see the placement:
