Monti Strange Growth Pattern

Below is a pic of one of my Monti's. You can see that most of it is growing in a typical fashion, but the section in the middle is not. It grew straight down, and isn't getting any light on the growth edge.
My educated guess says that perhaps flow had something to do with it? I think that's odd since on either side of the odd growth section it's growing just fine.
Any other ideas? Should I break off the section that grew straight down and see if it starts a new growth edge?

Why - i think that it just adapt to your environment. Probably - there is a lot of reflected light that it harvest in that part.
