Need some pointers to fix this. I always seem to be able to grow coral fine for a few months then they die back.

I have a 3x3in rainbow monti that’s been growing fast. It’s put on another 1x1in of growth in the last month or two. Have a couple other months that where also growing good.

Been busy the last few days and went and checked on the tank last night. Didn’t think there would be any issues with how well it has been growing.

The center of the coral is turning white, it’s looks slightly fuzzy. Polyps are out, it like it loosing color. The other montipora arnt turning white, however there polyps are not out like they usually are.

I notice this last night, I don’t have a photo of the coral, but I’ll get one at lunch. I added carbon(toxins from softy’s?) to the tank and reduced light slightly.

Tank isn’t very old, maybe 4-5 months, however 75% of the rock was from an established tank. It’s a 20g long with a 15g sump. Has an aquarium controller so temp is stable. Has auto top off. Parameters are as follows. This tank has been hovering around 15ppm of nitrates with no issues, however that number has dropped recently.

1.025 Sal,
500 cal,
1320 mag,
9 Alk,
7.5ppm nitrate,
.003-.05 phosphate(hard to see, salifert)
79.3-79.5 temp.

Tank is bottomless, has a badly functioning skimmer, a refugium, probably 40-50lb or more of live rock. 1 damsel. Had some cleanup crew, but they all slowly died(I’m guessing the damsel has a snack).

In this first photo you can see the monti in the back, that center part is where the main drag was removed to another tank(gave it to a friend). That center area is now almost complete filled. Photo is from dec. 23.

I'm sure people have better info but I had this same issue when I decided to stop doing regular water changes. Parameters were fine but I wasn't testing for things like strontium. Just a thought

It usually get a water change once every two weeks. Last one was just over a week ago. Reef crystals.

Hmm possible issues with a higher alk and a lower nutrient level burning? I'm interested in what others think as I have had this issue before

Dead clean up crew is concerning, didnt think damsels are prone to eating snails and crabs

It may not be the damsel. They could be getting stuck on my frag rack. As you can see in the photo there are decent sized holes in it.
