I bought this as a monti cap, but is it really? It seems different than any monti cap I have seen. This seems to be thicker and doesn't seem to have the same growth pattern.

Could it be something else?

Does appear to be a cap. However it could be growing slightly different do to your flow pattren

Ok thanks. It is a fairly new addition. The only growth since coming into my tank is the encrusting that's happening on the frag. We will see...

How lonbg have you had it? What is it growing on and was it like thaf when you purchased it? The seller may have had it growing up instead of outwards. That may have made it grow like that.

I have had it for maybe a month. It is on an acrylic plug and it looks identical to when I bought it except that it is starting to encrust on the plug.

I qould go with what i said on my previous post wuth why it is growing like that. Now that you have positioned it like that its trying to focus energy on encrusting so it has a stronger base to keep from breaking off.

Great, thanks for the info!

This. With monti caps, typically a white rim around the edge indicates growth. You'll notice your new growth on the frag plug has these telltale white rims. In many cases, new additions to a tank will encrust the plug or the rock onto which they're placed before growing upward and outward. This is to support further growth and weight of the colony.
