my montipora has almost what looks like spikes on its back side, and the back side is a white cream color about a third of the way down. Is this normal? The front side seems to look fine with a white trim around the edge.

It's normal for the side that doesn't get light to not have any color. The spikes are just an attempt to encrust. Nice coral.
