Hello reefies, I am new to sps and I would like to know what type my montipora is (encrusting, plating, branching, etc.) and how I would be able to tell in the future.

I always adored the look of a plated montipora colony, those impressive looking ones at public aquariums and overgrown reefer’s tanks

You will need a daylight picture. Your branching Will already be branching when you buy them. I would Google each type and what will pop up these days will be frag picks. Montipora digitata are great easy branching, Jedi mind tricks, flower petal, pink rim and apple berry are great monti's. Moni caps should be plating. Look up firewalker Moni cap.

Hey y’all. Still have no clue what type it is. It has grown a bit and has just grown around the rock not into the water column

so here are some more pictures : )

That looks like it could be a spoingodes, I have a couple monti species in my Nano - I’ll get a few photos of them in a few minutes.
in total I have 5 Monti pieces but I believe I only have 3-4 species.

Mine is a tropic thunder montipora. When It was given to me, It was very brown. It took a few months to change to it's color you see here under t5's. I don't know if it will change more.

The top one matches a bit in shape but not exactly. I actually just went and picked up some plating red montis, were cheaper than the encrusting one I got now too. I’ll just glue the encrusting one somewhere random and hope it’ll become something cool

They are the same coral frag that broke. You can't go by shape. Even color. Each system will produce different colors to an extent. Look up tropic thunder montipora and you see many different colors.

why are you a nemesis of pistol shrimps

Of course some people may not mind but I’m on my way to make a pistolrx
