What happens when an encrusting montipora (rainbow for example) comes up against a leather coral, (ex sinularia or toadstool)?

Does the leather coral "move" ? Does it sting back on the montipora? Does the monti just avoid them once it encroaches?

They will sting each other. It all depends on the species and how healthy each individual coral is. My Superman monti was growing disgustingly fast, to the point where I was worried about it taking over that section of the tank and how I’d frag it. But, my orange ricordia boxed it in, killed half the monti colony and turned the dead half into good ol pink/purple coralline algae.

Until it happens, you won’t know what happens, but one of them won’t have fun.

That being said, some corals can bump each other no problem, even if they’re totally different species. Strongest sting I’ve seen yet is from my ultra lobophylia. Anything that touches him gets stuck and begins to die until I separate them.
