moorish idol (i know) swimming upside down .

still moving around and struggling at that, got him in a small 2.5 gallon tank at the moment but my question is it a gonner? or ? was eating earlier and aggressively, look back at tank an hour later it was upsidedown swimming.. wondering if the anemone didn't sting him or if its a case of random out fo the blue cases that happen with these things

0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 5 nitrates 8.1 ph ( has always been)

Curious - how long has this been going on?
Why is he in a 2.5 gallon aquarium (probably won't last long in that either way) - make sure you have an ammonia badge, air stone, heater, etc
does he have any suggestion of disease?
are there any other fish in the tank that look like they have any illness?
How long did you have the fish - QT? Meds?

135 gallon 6 foot I’ve had it since March so I’ve had it a while nothing new to tank I the past 6 months nothing visible on anything. My coral Beaty is pushing 2 years in my tanks... now that in mind this tank is just over a year old after upgrading from a 60 that was over a year old ..

Salinity is 1.024 and just double checked

always has been highest I have had was 1.025


It’s in a 2.5 atm as the movement from 2 gyres is to much for him in the main display water was tanken from display for the moment and nothing else is in the 2.5 except air pump for now and small piece of rock from main tank .. and go from there
Nothing is dosed no meds nothing with exception of reef fusion and reef plus but have since day one .. sorry for gramme rattling on a phone sucks laptop just crashed and repairing OS now..

Tank is over a year(2 years total with previous moved in to this one)... the idol is from March

other parameters i havent had checked yet this month so i wont assume local place does it for me, I just check the basics since i dont have much for coral/sps/lps but I haven't had issue with levels as I follow what the ma and pa shop tells me..

currently have a sailfin tang, bluehippo(smaller) yellow tail angel, my coral beauty 4 clowns(2 i have had from the start of my salt water advventure 2 years ago) gobies, 2 azure's male anthia lyretail , green dragonet , halloween crabs and all that cleanup crew , coral band shrimp, cleaner shrimp,

This makes me think of a swim bladder issue. I’m sorry this is happening.

It could be a swimbladder issue caused by rapidly eating, constipation (which presses the swimbladder and doesnt allow it to empty properly. Did it happen to happen after eating?

Honestly - I might just put him back in the tank and turn down the gyres - as compared to the 2.5 gallon - if there is no outward sign of disease. For freshwater fish - you can dose Mg - but I'm not sure that would work well with Saltwater. There was also another thread here a couple days ago - talking about micro bubbles - and that causing problems (gas bubble disease ) - but that doesnt sound like this

yea he was eating nori, and mysis hourish prior but he never surfaces... its odd watching fish swim around upside down, just got a better look and it does look like bladder is enlarged, anything I can or should do? find piles of info for goldfish but dang this cost a tad more then a goldfish around here.

Swim Bladder Disorder/fish constipation:

Symptoms - Both of these have identical symptoms, but fish with swim bladder disorder generally do not survive. So your best bet is to treat for constipation and hope for the best. The fish will swim erratically, and appear to have difficulty maintaining its equilibrium. It may appear buoyant at the surface of the water, sometimes swimming in circles.

Treatment options - Feed 1 or 2 peeled boiled green peas (same kind you & I eat). Repeat daily even if the fish’s condition improves. The fiber contained in the peas will help “push things out.” If dealing with a fish that refuses to eat, you can try Epsom salt (as a laxative) or an antibiotic such as Kanamycin (aka Seachem Kanaplex) that lists diarrhea as a possible side effect.

Epsom Salt:

How To Treat - 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons of aquarium water. Repeat only once, if necessary. Use only “USP” grade Epsom salt.

Pros - Reef safe, as Epsom salt is just magnesium sulfate.

Cons/Side Effects - The effects of excessive sulfate in a reef aquarium are not fully known.

And btw - If I was going to use the Epsom salts I might do it in the smaller tank for a couple hours - and then let him into the main tank and keep your fingers crossed - a nd then maybe repeat tomorrow

just a question, going to do Epsom as its something we always have Epsom USP .. after a while can I put him in the sump? I used a 40 L as a sump and have an area that was made for a refuge that's not used it would hold him fine with low flow in the area. rather then the turbines of the XF350's tossing him/her around

i know its a hard fish but ive had him/her a while now , il do what I can to save it but its my daughter that's going to have a hard time

I would suggest you mix the Mg sulphate completely before you put a fish in - make sure there is no suplfur smell. In the meantime - keeping the fish in the sump seems like a good idea. You can also try the food Recs. I would try it for. a couple hours - using water from your tank - with the MgSO4 - again mixing well you can make it ahead of time.
