Idol decided to start eating my coral today, no changes in feeding just added this new frag last night and woke up to him having an expensive snack. Amazing fish but definitely risky, will be finding a new home.

Maybe the coral itself isn’t doing too well? My blenny nipped an SPS I had but it only nipped 1 and I didn’t know why until the coral itself started showing signs of not doing well. The nipping was the day after the coral went into the tank by the way.

Probably the other way around.Maybe the coral itself isn’t doing too well? My blenny nipped an SPS I had but it only nipped 1 and I didn’t know why until the coral itself started showing signs of not doing well. The nipping was the day after the coral went into the tank by the way.
I thought that too for a few hours, seemed like he was just lightly nipping and maybe just eating parts that where extra slimy or algae? then he started nailing it like he is in the video lol, either way hes killing the coralMaybe the coral itself isn’t doing too well? Same situation where was all good for months and then one day just decided to start munching? My past moorish idol was ballistic with corals. Never again.
He was definitely a piggy lol, I think pellets on an auto feeder along with multiple regular frozen feedings daily and nori are the key to keeping them. Also get them young, much easier to get eatingMine were pretty good and ate anything we put in the tank, never touched corals.
Nope. Mine was bad with corals pretty much on day 1.Same situation where was all good for months and then one day just decided to start munching?
This is what eventually happens with almost all idols in a reef tank. They are not trustworthy around 90% of coral species. I found most euphyllia, gonis and a few sps that make a lot of mucus (e.g. green slimer) are generally left alone. Haven't tried them with any soft corals so I can't speak to that.

I will add that even though idols are closely related to surgeonfish and they also happily graze on algae, their dentition is quite different. Idols have quite strong and sharp teeth for ripping not only algae but all manner of other sessile inverts apart. They can do quite a bit of damage to corals in a short peiod of time. I flipped a rock over while snorkeling in Hawaii and watched an idol absolutely demolish a large tunicate on the underside of the rock in about 20 seconds. This is what eventually happens with almost all idols in a reef tank.
